Hey, I was wondering if you could go into the concept of 'agender' some more ~ I refer to myself as 'cisgender' since I thought that meant not having any major issues with the gender you were raised (but I may misunderstand this). It just seemed like if I were male, society would frown more on me expressing my personality and interests. But I always identified with genderless/ambiguously-gendered characters (eg: Krazy Kat) and wished I could be 'free' like them. Is that something else though?

“Agender” means not identifying with a gender, not having a gender, or not experiencing gender. Some agender folks also find the concept of gender strange, or feel like it doesn’t make sense for their experiences. Here are some links I found from agender folks discussing it in more depth.

Cisgender means you identify with the gender assigned to you at birth. Transgender means you identify with something else. Having “major issues” isn’t really a defining feature, because some trans people have gender dysphoria and some of us don’t, and some cis people object to the gender roles and stereotypes assigned to them but still feel like their assigned genders are correct. It is also possible for someone to technically qualify as trans, but to choose not to identify as part of that group.

A good phrase I once heard about being transgender is, “It’s not about whether the old shoe fits. It’s about whether the new shoe fits better.” You do not have to be miserable in order to have a gender identity (or lack of gender) different from what was assigned to you.

It’s okay to explore ideas like “agender” to see if one of them fits you better than cisgender. It is also okay if you partly identify with your assigned gender but don’t feel like it describes you completely, or if you later go back to identifying as cis. As long as you’re sincere in your questioning and treat other people’s identities with respect, then you’re not doing anything wrong.

Sometimes the characters you identify with can be a reflection of your own feelings about gender. I went through something similar. If you’re thinking of questioning your gender and this feels relevant to you, then it’s certainly worth exploring.
